The Bad Lena really reminds me of Elena form The Vampire Diaries, because she can be whiney. I mean, yes we understand about what’s going on, okay? Stop talking about it!
Also, they harp on how –apparently--southerns are all bible toting nut jobs with guns. Thank you, thank you for alienating half of your audience and insulting half of my family. And they’re not even subtle about it. Just write “Republicans are from the devil” and have it out, for gods sake. When you shame subtly, it makes it, just ten times as obvious. If I wanted to know about your opinions of politics-I’d ask you, or read your blog. Stop alienating your audiences. And that’s what authors like this do. I mean I have no, no problem with opposing views, and themes in books. But here’s the thing. These are supposed to be in the story, not the story in the themes. Subtly is a real problem I have with authors today which is one of the main reasons I despise reading Tamora Peirce’s books. There is no subtlety-none what so freaking ever. I mean, they make this book a freaking platform to bash where they come from. Nice, class act, really.
And, Sarah Dessen is the only one to really get teenagers and bullies correct. They are not like gossip girl, they are not loud and constantly in your face. They’re quite and cruel. Another book that doesn’t quite capture what true bullying is.
The Good
The story is unique, the characters are believable and the narrator -I just love him. It was so interesting seeing someone fall in love from a guys POV. I am a firm believer that the YA genre is saturated with girl narrators and nothing for boys. I want to read about boys! I want to know how they think, and plus they don’t bullshite like girls do, about emotions too much. They just are-which half the time is wonderful because that’s what really turns me off is constant analyzing and monologuing.
The terminology, Casters, is really great. It’s such a completely new take that I was blown away. Theres more I'd like to say, but truly it be spoiling it, go read it!!!
Rated: 7.5/10 (Pretty Good!)
Buy/Borrow: It’s very long, almost 600 pages, so at times it can become a chore, and there’s little to none re read value-you go through it once and you get it, so I’d say borrow from the library when it comes out. You really should read it!
